Conditional Sentences

CONDITIONAL SENTENCES



Conditional Sentences are also known as Conditional Clauses or If Clauses. They are used to express that the action in the main clause (without if) can only take place if a certain condition (in the clause with if) is fulfilled. There are three types of Conditional Sentences.


Conditional sentences type 1 : true in the present or future


S + MODAL V1 + V1 . . IF + S + V1 ATAU TO BE V1


example :


  1. If Rita ..... (to forget) her homework, the teacher .... (to give) her a low mark.

If Rita forgets her homework, the teacher will give her a low mark.

  1. If you .... (to wear) sandals in the mountains, you ..... (to slip) on the

If you wear sandals in the mountains, you will slip on the rocks.

  1. If my friends (to come), I (to be) very happy.

If my friends come, I will be very happy.




Conditional sentences type 2 : untrue in the present


S + MODAL V2 + V2 . . IF + S + V2 ATAU TO BE V2


Example


  1. If Susan .... (to study) harder, she .... (to be) better at school.

If Susan studied harder, she would be better at school.

  1. If they (to have) enough money, they (to buy) a new car.

If they had enough money, they would buy a new car.

  1. If we (to hurry), we (to catch) the bus.

If we hurried, we would catch the bus.




Conditional sentences type 3 : untrue in the past


S + MODAL V2 + HAVE + V3 . . IF + S + HAD + V3 ATAU HAD BEEN


Example :


  1. If the teacher ... (to explain) the homework, I ...... (to do) it.

If the teacher had explained the homework, I would have done it.

  1. If the police .... (to come) earlier, they .... (to arrest) the burglar.

If the police had come earlier, they would have arrested the burglar.

  1. If you ...... (to buy) fresh green vegetable, your salad ....... (to taste) better.

If you had bought fresh green vegetable, your salad would have tasted better.
